Fiji is found about 1,000 miles of New Zealand and consists of over 800 islands and islets. It became a British colony in 1874 and gained independence on 10 October 1970. The population is made up almost entirely of Indians and Fijians. Sugar cane is the primary export and tourism is also a particularly productive industry.
